Geocache Description:

This is a very easy five part multi that will showcase the Pine Coulee Reservoir. This cache is named after my Aunty Pat who would have loved to live in a house on this lake!
Please be stealthy as there are often muggles in the area.

THE FINAL CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

Instead, in stages 1 through 4 of the five part multi, you will be looking for a small cache containing only coordinates to the location of the next cache. The fourth cache contains the coordinates to the final cache.

The entire multi will take about an hour to complete, will give you a tour of the Pine Coulee project and will cover about 16 km.

The Pine Coulee Reservoir was created in 2000 when the Pine Coulee Dam was built. The reservoir provides secure water supplies for over 4,500 residents in southern Alberta, including the residents of Nanton, Stavely, Granum and Claresholm. The project also provides enough water to irrigate 21,000 acres of land.

Construction for the project started in 1996 and there are four components. The dam, the reservoir, the diversion weir and the canal. The weir diverts runoff water from Willow Creek into the canal, which then carries the water into the reservoir in Pine Coulee. The coulee was a dry valley before the project was built.

The dam cost about $50 million and was funded entirely by the provincial government.

People in the area used to be concerned about stable water sources but with the contruction of the reservoir they no longer have to ration water. The dam is a big benefit to farmers as their supply of water for crops and livestock used to be really unpredictable. The project also creates a new location for water sports including fishing with Walleye and Pike spawning areas.
