Kastro Monolithos Traditional Cache

This geocache will lead you to one of the most beautiful places at the whole island: the medieval castle (Greek:kastró monolithos) located next to Monolithos in the south-west of Rhodes. The container itself is a small-sized 'Lock and Lock' container, which bears enough space for Travel Bugs, Geocoins and other smaller trade items. Along with the log book there has also a pencil been placed inside, so please do not take it with you!

The castle, which stands on a large rock with a height over about 240 metres, is located just next to the village Monolithos. It was been built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John to protect the area around the village from enemies of any kind: until its destruction each family living in the village also had its own house located inside the castle as a place of refuge.

Even though Kastro Monolithos is only a ruin today, it is worth climbing up the hill and enjoying the fantastic view to the Cape Fourni and the offshore islands.

You can reach the castle by a short walk up the hill starting from a parking lot located next to a small kiosk (you may park your own vehicle there if the location is not too overcrowded), the path itself isn't that difficult, but you have to watch your step and should wear steardy shoes. The track is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs as the steps are not easily-accessible.

On the top of the castle you can visit the chapel of the Holy Panteleimos, named after the martyr and early christian holy Pantaleon.

We highly recommend you to take a camera with you so can take nice photos of the awesome view and the interesting leftovers from bygone times.

The cache has been hidden at a place not frequented very often by geomuggles; however you should be really careful whilst retrieving the container from its hiding-place.
