This is the 22nd in a series of caches honoring the 58 different types of soils found within the State of Rhode Island. Soils were a major factor in the settling and early farming of RI, and soils continue to influence our industry, recreation, wildlife, and homes. As you complete this series, please take note of how the soil is determined in-part by the landscape position (summit, sideslope, drainageway), which in turn affects the vegetation.
This soil cache is located within an area of Bigapple soil, a relatively new soil series that is just begining to be mapped in RI. Bigapple soils are human-transported soils that originated from coastal dredging activities; the soils materials were not deposited by nature. As human-altered soils are very common, it is becoming clear to land managers, the construction industry, and others that these human-modified soils are important to map so that they can be managed properly.
Bigapple soils are sandy dredge materials that are greater than 40" in thickness. Human "artifacts", such as cans and bottles may be present within the soil. Areas of Bigapple soil have typically been converted to housing, commercial development, or parking lots. Areas that have become vegetated are typically covered with beach grass, poison ivy, beach plum, red cedar, and pin cherry.
This location contains the fill deposits from the dredging of the Port of Galilee that covered portions of the Bluff Hill Cove marsh and deposits from the 1991 project to restore the Galilee Bird Sanctuary (SORI #21: Pawcatuck). The area is now used as a parking area for locals, although a pass is needed. The dirtroad is also a cutthrough from the Escape Road to Sand Hill Cove Road,a lthough it rarely sees traffic.
As for the cache, you are looking for the standard CC containing some swag, official series description, and a log. Minimal/no bushwhacking required! The top of the hill provides a great view of the Galilee Bird Sanctuary. Please use stealth and rehide well.
This is meant to be a park, grab, and check out the scenery. Do not leave your car here while you explore Galilee! The signs here say that "parking passes are required", but locals come here to check out the bird sanctuary.
Congrats to Caching Campers for the FTF!
