This is the 23rd in a series of caches honoring the 58 different types of soils found within the State of Rhode Island. Soils were a major factor in the settling and early farming of RI, and soils continue to influence our industry, recreation, wildlife, and homes. As you complete this series, please take note of how the soil is determined in-part by the landscape position (summit, sideslope, drainageway), which in turn affects the vegetation.
This soil cache is located within an area of Fortress soil, a newly proposed soil series that is just begining to be mapped in RI, NY, and NJ. Fortress soils are human-transported soils that originated from coastal dredging activities; the soils materials were not deposited by nature. As human-altered soils are very common, it is becoming clear to land managers, the construction industry, and others that these human-modified soils are important to map so that they can be managed properly.
Fortress soils are sandy dredge materials that are greater than 40" in thickness. Human "artifacts", such as cans and bottles may be present within the soil. Areas of Fortress soil have typically been converted to housing, commercial development, or parking lots. Areas that have become vegetated are typically covered with beach grass, poison ivy, beach plum, multiflora rose, Phragmites, and green briar.
Fortress soils are similar to Bigapple soils, but Fortress soils are located lower on the landscape and are classified as moderately well drained, meaning they have a water table that is closer to the soil surface. Bigapple soils are well drained.
The cache area is the parking lot for the Galilee public boat launch. This area was probably part of the Bluff Hill Cove marsh system, but was filled with dredge materials that probably originated from the Port of Galilee. You are looking for the standard CC containing some swag, official series description, and a log. Minimal/no bushwhacking required (what a change for this series)! Once you have found the cache, check out the view of Bluff Hill Cove from the boat ramp or on the Great Island Road bridge! Please use stealth and rehide well. Enjoy!
High fives to Bjm3rd for the FTF!
