Geocache Description:

Congratulations to "Eagle and the nuts" for FTF.!

The Cache is an official Boy Scouts Cache to Eagle geocache placed by the Timucua District, Gulf Ridge Council. Please use caution when retrieving caches and always remember safety.

The boy scout motto is : BE PREPARED!!

This cache was hidden as part of the Cache to Eagle Project which highlights Service Projects that Scouts have completed as part of their path to the Highest Rank in Scouting. A Scout wishing to attain the Rank of Eagle must plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to a religious institution, school, or his community. The project idea must be approved by the Scoutmaster, Troop Committee and by the Council/District before he can start.

This cache is one of the 12 caches to be hidden within the Timucua District of the Gulf Ridge Council. The Timucua District is comprised of Scout Troops from Eastern Hillsborough County.

Each cache in this series is dedicated to one of the 12 points of the Scout Law.

A scout in Troop 61 seeing the need for some way to enhance the hiking trails in Alafia State Park, to allow for better access for all people visiting the park and walk the trails and cross some ravines. He worked with the Park Ranger and staff to get their support and learn about what kinds of materials could be used and any design limitations.

After a detailed reconnaissance of the trails, he selected the sites along two separate trails. He then designed the bridges so that they conformed with park regulations. After gaining approval on the design, he set about to gather material and schedule the work days to build the bridges.

On September 10-11 and 17-18, the scout assembled his work crew. After providing a safety briefing, he organized the work crew into teams to accomplish different aspects of the bridges’ construction. The result of the project was two 30’ bridges that spanned creek beds along hiking trails in Alafia State Park.

Unfortunately the bridges have either been moved, or no longer in existence. This geocache is not located at the site of the bridges, but rather at the entrance to the Park.

Shane McElroy. was awarded his Eagle Scout on June 23, 2006 as a member of Troop 61, Timucua District, Gulf Ridge Council.

Shane remains active as a adult leader in scouting and currently serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 61 in Valrico, FL.

Please make sure to take note of the Scout Law description inside each cache in the series to complete the Scout Law so you can claim your Cache to Eagle patch.
