A quick drive-by located just to the south of Wold Newton, on the road from Thwing, in the Yorkshire Wolds. The cache is in a small lock and lock box inside a camouflage bag. It is NOT at the monument described below, which is on PRIVATE LAND.
The Wold Cottage is a farm just south of the attractive village of Wold Newton in the lovely Yorkshire Wolds. Near Wold Cottage, at 3 p.m. on 13th December 1795, a meteorite weighing 56 pounds (c. 25kg) crashed to Earth – close to a farm worker called John Shipley. This was the first UK recorded meteorite, and is the second biggest ever to hit England. The bulk of the meteorite is in The Natural History Museum in London, but fragments of it are currently in the possession of an American collector who in April 2010 sent a tiny fragment to the owners of Wold Cottage.
A brick column was erected where the meteorite fell – in a field near the farm – as a monument to the event. It is an impressive monument and has an inscription which reads:
“Here on this spot, December 13, 1795 fell from the atmosphere an extraordinary stone. In breadth twenty-eight inches, in length thirty-six inches and whose weight was fifty-six pounds. This column in memory of it was erected by Edward Topham, 1799.”
The cache is NOT at the monument – which is on PRIVATE LAND - but is a quick drive-by. It is located at a spot from which it is possible to see the monument if you look downhill in a roughly NW direction about three quarters of a mile away. Binoculars would help to give a better view!
