After checking in at the visitor center and getting a trail map
you
are off toward “Camino de Avis” or the “Road
of
Birds”. This area of the park is a Thronscrub type
habitat
that is often full of a few different species of palomas
(doves).
“Camino de Avis” could have easily been called
Camino
de Reptil (Road of the Reptile) as it is a wonderful place to
look
for lagartos and tortugas (lizards and tortoise). Areas like
this
in South Texas are often very dry and that is why we irrigate
water
through the concrete columns found standing throughout the
Rio
Grande Valley. Be mindful of the thorns and needles on the
plants
in this area.
