This 24 acre parcel was the first piece of Wolf Hill property and
was acquired in 1997. The land was formerly used as a summer camp
for a Providence Boy Scout troop, but after the camp burned in the
1940's the land was virtually forgotten. The only remaining sign
from its previous use is a chimney and fireplace. From this spot
there is a view of the Providence skyline, and on a clear day, one
can see as far as the Mount Hope bridge.
Mercer lookout is off of a blue blazed trail, at the southern
portion of Wolf Hill. It can be reached from the main Wolf Hill
Parking area by following the green trail to the red trail, to the
white trail (crude
trail map). Coming in from the other direction, there is
parking for one car near the Narragansett Electric power substation
on Mountain Dale at Wolf Hill Rd (N 41° 52.870 W 071° 31.672). The
power company is revamping the power lines and there is now a gate
up where the former parking was - please do not block the gate.
Also, because they need to move heavy machinery to work on the
lines, they have put rock down on the power line trails so they are
no longer usable for mountain biking and not great for hiking along
the power line.
Before the powerline construction I had wanted to place a cache
here for quite a while, but it seems that a group of teens was
using the lookout for some late night parties. There was a lot of
trash but each time I came I would haul the trash out. The first
time a garbage bag full and each time after I would have less and
less. At least they contained the trash to the fireplace. Finally
on my latest trip here there was no trash. Since I don't like to
send cachers to trashy areas, I felt like the spot could now handle
a cache. Although, because the area is visited quite a bit by
hiking groups (as well as the teens), I felt it couldn't support a
regular size cache, so the cache is a small. If you see trash
building up, feel free to let me know and I'll take care of it.
There is some broken glass in the area so be careful with your
dogs. Mine haven't had a problem since by the time we have reached
this spot they are not running as excitedly as when first getting
out on the trails. Sadly each time I come the fireplace is a little
more dilapidated, which I guess isn't too bad since the site is
returning to its natural state.
Congratulations to ritell for FTF.
