This should be an easy cache to find along with an English and
history lesson. I do not know when the practice began or ended, but
years ago the railroad used to name the crossings where state roads
crossed over its tracks. They even had signs, like street signs.
Back in the 1950s the intersection of State Route 691 (a dirt road
then) and the RR was known as Pacoman Crossing. The correct
pronunciation is: Pa-co-man.
Pa....as in ma and pa
co.... as if you were about to say comb
man... as in man, although some people tended to say men.
SR 691 is a short road that connects between Lawyers Road and
Leesville Road in the Evington area. It was paved in the early
1970s and when it needed a 911 name, it was named after the old RR
crossing which is still part of the travel on this road, although
the crossing was relocated a little West when paving reshaped the
road. Now that a lot of the old folks who remember Pacoman are
gone, we have a new generation who grew up on Pac-Man video games
that sadly break the syllables in the wrong places and butcher the
name by calling it Pac-o-man road. Even 911 people, who should know
better. So here is my contribution to both geocaching and the
preservation of a small historical fact. Should you happen to
overhear the mispronounced name, you now know the truth. I hope you
will have an opportunity to share with them how the name came
about. Maybe geocachers can help save the correct pronunciation of
the name for the future.
Permission is granted to access the cache. There is a small
pullover area where a car can be parked, not far from the cache.
You are looking for a small plastic container. When you find the
container, just lift the entire container up and un-screw the top
off. There is a small pencil there but it would be best if you
brought your own pen. There is room for small objects or
geocoins.
Congratulations to Boomanchu for the FTF!!
