Geocache Description:

This is the second cache on a trail along bridle ways in Bicknacre. It is family and dog friendly and can either be done by foot or bicycle. The whole trail should take about an hour. The hides have deliberately been made to be quite easy to find as the emphasis is on getting the family out together to enjoy a walk or bike ride. Beware the paths can be very muddy in winter or after heavy rain. This is a popular area for dog walkers, joggers and horse riders so plenty of muggles around.

When you approach the site you will see dog roses. Another name for the dog rose plant is witches' briar because in Ireland the dog rose was believed to hold magical powers of love, luck, healing and protection.

The flowering period of the dog rose is usually in June and July and they vary from white to a light pink. Its fruits are bright red, ripening in September and into October. The fruits are eaten by birds and small mammals. They help to disperse the seeds. Another way that this plant reproduces is by sending out ‘suckers’ from its roots. These new plants are genetically identical to the parent.

You can make a jam from the fruits; they are rich in vitamin C.

If you want to spend more time in the area the trail is right next to Thrift Wood, 48 acres of ancient woodland leased and managed by the Essex Wildlife trust.

Visit: Essex Wildlife Trust to find out more about Thrift Wood.

This cache is a small container camouflaged to fit in with the surroundings. The tree coverage makes it hard to get an accurate reading but the clue should point you in the right direction. You will need to bring a pen with you.

If you park at the entrance to Thrift Wood you may wish to do the trail in reverse order, starting at the final cache in the series.
