Geocache Description:

A nice easy stroll along the top of the gorge takes you to a stunning vantage point. For the more adventurous, continue along the Kranz trail. Please respect the privacy of the Kranz hut.

Cumberland Nature Reserve is a private reserve situated in the Table mountain area, just east of Pietermaritzburg. Some of the fauna to look out for include: Impala, Nyala, Kudu, Oribi, Duiker, Reedbuck, Bushbuck, Giraffe, Lynx, Porcupine, Antbear, Bushpig, Zebra, Wildebeest, African Rock Python and more than 230 Bird species.

There is an extensive network of trails that wander through the plateau savannahs and vary in length from short strolls to more strenuous hikes with spectacular views over the Umgeni River.

Picnic sites are available under the shade of flat-crown acacia trees, and offer braai facilities, picnic tables, toilets and drinking water.

Should you wish to stay a bit longer there is a campsite available (no power points) or alternatively self-catering accommodation.

Gates are open from sunrise to sunset. The entrance fee is R10 per person, payable at the ‘Honesty Box’.

Please note that this is a nature reserve so no pets are allowed. Please respect all signage as we have been very fortunate to be allowed access to this reserve for geocaching.

Directions: From the N3 highway through Pietermaritzburg, take the Ohrtman Road offramp. Turn north-east and follow Ohrtman Road past Meadow Feeds and Epol Feeds. Cross the first intersection, and 2km from the highway, turn right onto the M30 towards Table Mountain. After 0.8km turn left onto the M30 Table Mountain road for 3.3km, and then right along the Table Mountain road for 1.8kms. The Cumberland Nature Reserve turn-off onto road D408 is on your left. The reserve is 6.5km down this road. Please proceed slowly through the citrus orchards which are shortly before the reserve.
