PORTO DA CRUZ
A freguesia do Porto da Cruz pertence ao Concelho de Machico e está situada a 36 km da capital madeirense, já em plena costa norte da ilha. Os principais sítios são: Maiata, Casas Próximas, Terra Baptista, Larano, Serrado, Cruz da Guarda, Massapez e Referta.
As montanhas que circundam a localidade, em parte transformadas em campos de cultivo, formam um anfiteatro para o mar que, apesar da sua bravura, ainda permite a existência de duas pequenas praias de areia negra.
Do ponto de vista geológico, o Porto da Cruz é um autêntico mostruário de belíssimas formações como as sucessivas camadas de cinzas vulcânicas ou as formações basálticas. A nível marítimo, o Porto da Cruz pertence ao mais extenso planalto insular submarino da ilha que se estende da Ponta de S. Lourenço até S. Jorge.
Desde sempre ligado à exploração da terra, o Porto da Cruz apresenta uma paisagem eminentemente rural e agrícola. Os seus engenhos atestam ainda hoje a pujança que o açúcar trouxe à economia local.
A sua denominação advém do facto do seu descobridor haver afixado uma cruz de ferro no porto, no sentido de melhor assinalar o local, cuja baía, por ocasião do tempo sul, devido à sua acalmia, se apresentava como um abrigo às diversas embarcações que por ali passavam.
The villa of Porto da Cruz belongs to the Municipality of Machico and is situated 36 km from the capital of Madeira, along the island's north coast. The main sites are: Maiata, Casas Próximas, Terra Baptista, Larano, Serrado, Cruz da Guarda, Massapez and Referta.
The mountains surrounding the town, partly transformed into crop fields, an amphitheater formed by the sea that, despite its bravery, still allows the existence of two small beaches of black sand.
From the geological point of view, Porto da Cruz is a true showcase of beautiful formations such as the successive layers of volcanic ash or basalt formations. At sea, the Porto da Cruz belongs to the most extensive submarine plateau of the island that extends from Ponta de S. Lourenço to S. Jorge.
Always linked to the exploitation of land, Porto da Cruz has a predominantly rural and agricultural landscape. Its mills still attest the vigor that brought the sugar to the local economy.
Its name comes from the fact of his having discovered an iron cross posted on the harbor in order to better mark the spot, whose bay, at the time the south, due to its calm, appeared as a shelter for the various vessels that passed by.
