As you search for geocaches around Charters Towers, you'll notice that the majority of those hidden in the town area are nano or micro size containers. This is mainly due to the fact that any larger containers appear to be moved or go missing very quickly after they're placed, so it's often a case of a nano or nothing at all.
The history of Charters Towers started with the discovery of gold near Towers Hill in late 1871. In 1872 the goldfields were proclaimed, and named Charters Towers after the then gold commissioner W.S.E.M Charters, and the local "tors" or towers (small rocky hills) found in the area. It was declared a municipality in June 1877 and raised to the status of a city in 1909. While at the peak of it's gold production, it was the second largest city in Queensland with a population approaching 30,000 people and today, while still called a city, it has population of around 9,500 making it a miniture or "nano-city" of sorts.
