Geocache Description:

As you travel past a disused mine site, you'll see plenty of covered sign-posts and a short, but so far seldom used detour, bypassing a small section of the Gregory Developmental Road.

Located about 33km southwest of Charters Towers is the site of the Highway Reward gold/copper mine, and while the mine itself hasn't been in operation for many years, it's left an impact on the main road in the form of cracks that have appeared in the road surface. The reason for this (as explained to me), is that when the mine was closed, the remaining explosives on site were used to seal the mine face, which then weakened the rock layers above, which in turn just happen to be underneath a section of the Gregory Developmental Road. The detour, only 500m in length, has been placed here in case one day the cracks become larger and possibly subside into one huge pothole - so keep your eyes on the road, just in case !
