Geocache Description:

Another cache-and-dash in the Motorway Mayhem series, although this one involves a slightly longer walk than usual due to parking restrictions. There is adequate parking at the posted parking co-ordinates, but for cars only.

The M4 around Newport was built in 1967. This short section of motorway is remarkable both for the number of junctions serving the town** of Newport and for the fact that it passes through the only set of bored tunnels on any motorway in the UK.

Junctions 26 is immediately west of the tunnel portal. So close, in fact, that the countdown markers for the westbound off-slip are actually inside the westbound tunnel.

Look for the Newport Pandas on the roundabout. A family of pandas, either topiary or carved wood depending on the time of year, have looked out on the traffic for the last few years!

The Newport Pandas
Access to the cache is through Kimberley Park, so the parking which is inside the park is closed to vehicles during the hours of darkness, but the park remains open to pedestrians and there is a limited amount of street parking nearby. The cache is a nano. Wheelchair users will be able to get to within a few feet feet of the cache, but would need help with the final retrieve.

Note that there is water nearby which can be deep and fast-flowing at certain times of the year or after heavy rain - take care.

**Newport is, of course, a city. But it was only granted city status in 2002, so it was a town at the time of the construction of the motorway.
