Bearii Oasis Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

E_Zii: As I am unable to maintain this little Geocache any longer, I have decided to archive it. I hope someone else decides to hide a bunch of Geocaches in this area, there are so many interesting places to explore!

Farewell Bearii, I will miss you; it's been fun for 17 years, but now it is time to move on as life takes me on my journey in a different direction.

Geocache Description:

The Bearii Oasis Geocache is located in a nice little public park in the quiet little hamlet of Bearii. The GZ is a lovely place to break a long drive, have a picnic or let the kids (or geobeast) run around.

So, where is Bearii and how do you pronounce it? The quiet hamlet of Bearii is located approx 250 kms north of Melbourne; a pleasant 2.5hour drive.the township has the advantage of the picturesque Murray River close by for fishing, swimming, camping and boating activities. Bearii is an interesting community, surrounded by farmland, bushland (the Barmah forest along the River Murray) and populated with an interesing mix of people, many coming to the area for a "Tree Change".

Bearii is central to the towns of Cobram, in the east, Nathalia in the west, Numurkah in the south and Tocumwal(NSW) in the north - all being approx 30 minutes away. Further afield are the cities of Shepparton, Yarrawonga, Echuca and Denniliquin, all taking around 45-60minutes travel by car.

Oh, and Bearii is prounced "Beer aye" ...

Anyway, the Bearii township developed a nice little public park, with many locals chipping in to look after the grounds, plant trees and have the usual working bees that small communities are so good at. The park has a small playground, a community building, CFA shed, rough sports ground, public toilets, picnic tables and some arty totem poles that were painted by the local kids about 10 years ago. The park is a lovely little oasis sittng in the middle of farmland and small blocks; it's a nice spot to enjoy a picnic or perhaps break a long drive, as it is only a few minutes off the Murray Valley Highway.

Bearii is a surprising little place; you can find enterprising locals selling a range of things from organic produce, ice, yabbies and massages. You can find nice little B&Bs in the area and go on an awesome horse ride through the Barmah Forest with a real character called "Padge" (you'll see signs pointing to his unique establishment as you drive down the Murray Valley Highway). If you are observant you might also notice a strawbale house opposite the park (big green roof and mud covered walls!).

The Cache Container is a round 1 litre Sistema, camoflagued and tucked away in a discrete little hide. Please make sure you replace it all carefully, as it should not be visible at all.

While you are here in Bearii, you might like to explore a bit more and find some other caches in the area and perhaps (flooding and road conditions allowing) go down and see the River Murray.

Be mindful of snakes, especially now that we have the warmer weather back upon us!
