Geocache Description:

This cache is part tribute to dogtown (the cacher and his caches) and, therefore, mostly about Dogtown, the abandoned ghost town between Gloucester and Rockport on Cape Ann. We have populated this cache with all of the children waypoints you’d want to park in the right spots for Dogtown caches. This is one of the things that initially confused us about tackling the caches in Dogtown.

Not even the Visitors’ Center in Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park had a decent trail map, which you can sometimes find at the Cherry Street trailhead. They did, however, point us to the Related Web Link above which has an old but decent map of the Babson boulders and the old Dogtown map to which I’ve numbered corresponding parking waypoints. We wanted to make it easier to enjoy mysterious Dogtown, so ENJOY!

Alas, it seemed a lot of dogtown's caches were going the way of Dogtown, and becoming extinct. Although well researched and thought out, dogtown’s caches had suffered from lack of maintenance. We placed this cache in part to help right this! Folks have since "chipped in" with new containers and effort (like we did at GCJ99Q Klingon Homestead and fiber.traveler did at GCJ6ZD Get a Job). We want Dogtown to again rise to its potential as a top spot for Geocaching, so this cache has become our repository of CURRENT REFERENCE Dogtown information so that we may help introduce Dogtown to those unfamiliar with it.

Almost all Dogtown caches have a tick risk, if not thorns! Please come prepared for mosquitoes in warm weather. Our cache here is a 7”x7”x2.5” Lock ‘n’ Lock, it is our first Rockport cache. Expect a light 80-90' bushwhack. Nearby is one of dogtown's own caches, Witches Cross-Roads - Witches Bog GCJ0GE.

If you should find a travel bug in this cache or any other cache, please be sure to log it electronically twice, once when you grab it and again when you put it in another cache. This must be done so that its travels can be tracked. You must be a signed on member to do this. If you are not a signed on member of geocaching.com and do not intend to become a member, please do not take the travel bug. Membership is free. Join up and get in on the fun. Please use caution when hunting and replacing a cache. A muggled cache could lead to the loss of Travel Bugs or Geocoins.

First-To-Find prize is rarer than our usual coin with viewing box leave. We would’ve liked to leave a 20¢ piece for our twentieth cache, but even a beat-up 20¢ piece is worth over $100 (minted only 1875-1878)! Instead, we are leaving two pre-1965 Roosevelt dimes that are .900 silver. Dimes (and quarters and half dollars) minted 1964 and before were 90% silver. Congrats to HostaHead (LasaCana), Froedo Bagginz for FTF!

1931 Map that is still rather useful: (visit link)
More current trail map: (visit link) which they sometimes have at the Cherry Street trailhead.
November 2011: Added parking waypoint 6 for Pool Hill, simply drive between the two stone pillars and park. Courtesy of MT Pool and Boot Group.
July 2012: Added two more parking waypoints and a trailhead for upper Dogtown access.
May 2013: Better Babson Boulder map, now with GPS coordinates: (visit link)
