Søby Skole blev bygget i 1962. Kommunalbestyrelsen ønskede dengang en skulptur foran den nybyggede skole, som kunne symbolisere fremgang og udvikling af kommunen. Eigil Vedel Schmidts forslag ”En gravid kvinde med et lille barn” blev vedtaget og opstillet i 1965. Kunstneren stillede den betingelse at skulpturen blev placeret så lavt, at børnene kunne klappe den på maven. Skulpturen er udfør t i bornholmsk granit.

The school in Søby was built in 1962. Back then, the municipal council wanted a sculpture for the school symbolizing prosperity and progress in the municipality. Eigil Vedel Schmidts suggestion "En gravid kvinde med et lille barn" (A pregnant woman with a small child) was chosen and erected in 1965. The artist conditioned that the sculpture was placed in a way that children can reach and pat the belly. The sculpture is made of granite from the Danish island Bornholm.

Die Schule in Søby wurde gebaut in 1962. Der Gemeinderat wünschte eine Skulptur, die Fortschritt und Entwicklung symbolisieren konnte. Der Skulpturvorschlag von Eigil Vedel Schmidt "En gravid kvinde med et lille barn" (Eine schwangere Frau mit einer kleinen Kind) wurde angenommen, und in 1965 wurde sie aufgestellt. Der Künstler ausbedang sich, dass die Skulptur wurde errichten so dass Kinder der Magen streicheln können. Die Skulptur ist aus Granit aus Bornholm gemacht.
