Geocache Description:

Stockholm, Hello/Goodbye

Stockholm, Hello/Goodbye

A cache to either welcome you to Stockholm or to say goodbye.

Värtahamnen
Stockholm City bought the land from the state in 1879 to build a port for coal and other bulky cargo. The area was undeveloped and the state had plans to build a naval base on the site, there were already large areas to be used for port purposes and the approach conditions in the water were good.

The first phase of the port was built in 1879-1886 and a freight train from Karlberg opened in 1882. Värtahamnen widened and deepened gradually until 1918.

Silja Line began car ferry from Värtahamnen to Finland In 1966. Gradually the port was expanded. Train ferrys from Värtahamnen went to Naantali/Nådendalen in1967-1976, and to Turku in 1989. Traffic to Tallinn started in 1990 with collaboration between Nordstrom & Thulin and shipping ESCO (Estonian Shipping Company).
