This cache was hidden as part of the Cache to Eagle Project which highlights Service Projects that Scouts have completed as part of their path to the Highest Rank in Scouting. A Scout wishing to attain the Rank of Eagle must plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to a religious institution, school, or his community. The project idea must be approved by the Scoutmaster, Troop Committee and by the Council/District before he can start.
This cache is one of the 12 caches to be hidden within the Timucua District of the Gulf Ridge Council. The Timucua District is comprised of Scout Troops from Eastern Hillsborough County.
Each cache in this series is dedicated to one of the 12 points of the Scout Law.
These 2 caches (#10 and #12) will highlight the Eagle Service projects of 4 Eagle Scouts from Troop 109 who completed their youth scouting journey together. All four of these Eagle Scouts completed their Eagle project requirements at Rotary’s Camp Florida in Brandon. The primary purpose of this camp is to provide a place for children with disabilities and life threatening illnesses to go and just be kids. After meeting with the Director and members of the Board of Directors for the camp, each scout chose to work on different elements in the camp that needed to be improved upon in order to enhance the campers’ experience. This cache recognizes the Eagle projects of Michael Thomas McAnallen, and John Leland Menard.
Michael’s project resulted in access to one of the camps main outdoor elements by campers bound to a wheel chair. A large screened-in gazebo that has been at the camp for a couple of years stands to the right of the main walk into camp. Mike built a wooden walkway that connects the main sidewalk to the gazebo and flanked it with landscaping. Now all campers can enjoy access to this outdoor space.
John refurbished and replanted an existing butterfly garden that was overgrown with weeds and had lost plants to the winter freeze. Additionally, he built a pergola in the center of the garden for flowering butterfly attracting vines and updated the irrigation system. Hand painted signs identifying the plants in the garden help campers learn while they enjoy watching the butterflies.
The result of the projects was a complete refurbishment and renovation of key facilities within the Rotary Camp, Brandon which will be enjoyed by kids for years to come.
Colin Wade DeHate, Corey Gordon DeHate, Michael Thomas McAnallen, and John Leland Menard were awarded their Eagle Scout rank in a joint ceremony August 15, 2009 as members of Troop 109, Timucua District, Gulf Ridge Council.
Michael remains active in Scouting as a Junior Leader with Troop 109 and currently attends college.
John remains active in Scouting as a Junior Leader with Troop 109 and currently attends college
Please make sure to take note of the Scout Law description inside each cache in the series to complete the Scout Law so you can claim your Cache to Eagle patch.
