Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
You will need a boat in summer (and bug spray is highly recommended). I am told that you may be able to walk here in winter (across the ice). You will be doing a little bushwacking up a hill. The cache is placed on public land and the best way to get there is to take a boat across from the Salmon Lake State Park.
Also, if you have any stories about the history of Lengendary Lodge, please include them in your log.
This cache was placed in honor of my Father and my Great Uncle. My Great Uncle was the caretaker at Legendary Lodge from approximately 1945 - 1965. My Father worked at the lodge during the summer's of 1949 and 1950. At that time, the lodge was owned by the Bohrer family. The lodge was originally built around 1915 by William Clark, Jr. and was originally called "Mowitza Lodge". After William Jr. died, the lodge was owned by John T. Sullivan and Al and Thelma Wertheimer. In 1943, Minnie Hansen purchased the property and, then in 1945 sold the lodge to Randolph and Audiss Bohrer. In 1950, Legendary Lodge was purchased by the Roman Catholic Church and remains a camp where hundreds of young people come each year.
Note: This cache will also be maintained by fellow cacher Johnstine when I am not in the area. A big thank you to him for the oversight.
The cache was placed on 6 July, 2011 by my Father and I while we were re-living some of my dad's childhood memories. He had recently written a story about his youth and about Legendary Lodge so, we went there for a visit during the summer of 2011; sixty-one years after my dad worked there. My dad tells wonderful stories of the lodge. He has many pictures and remembers his own cabin "Wildcat" and the many hours of splitting wood, building fires to heat water for guests, going to the ice house and using a crosscut saw to cut 2 ft x 2 ft blocks of ice from larger ice slabs for the lodge kitchen, and caring for the horses. He also had great fortune in taking care of Numa, a cougar cub that had been caught and raised by my Great Uncle. Numa was just a couple weeks old when my Father and Great Uncle took her in and after three years of living at Legendary Lodge, she was taken to Helena zoo where she lived out the rest of her life.
As for the cache site:
One of my dad's jobs was to get rid of the trash and he was told to put it on a small boat and to take it to this area of low-land next to the lake. This cache is placed upon a hill overlooking beautiful Salmon Lake...and also, overlooking the site of this historic dump. If you look around the low-land areas near the water, you may find some old cans and bottles (most broken now). There may be some history in this "old trash" but, please practice good CITO activity and let's keep any "new trash" out of beautiful Salmon Lake.
