Ilex peculiaris Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is located on the lower slopes of Slieve Meelmore, Mourne Mountains, Co.Down.
The cache is located in a beautiful area of the Mournes and, although it is not actually on the mountain tops its position provides great views northwards to Slievenaman, Slieve Croob and beyond. It is best approached from either the Meelmore Lodge Amenity Area (parking, toilets, cafe - going this way avoids fording a river) or the Trassey Car Park. In both cases the first section is on a well made track - however, soon you will be crossing gently undulating mountainside which can be wet in places. As you walk along take time to look at the ground as well as enjoying the views - in late spring and summer you will be treading on a carpet of Bedstraw, Milkwort, Round-Leaved Sundew, Tormentil and Butterwort.
The cache itself continues the botanical theme - watch the prickles. And, talking of prickles compare the lower and upper leaves - do you notice a difference? Please bring a pen/pencil and return the cache container carefully - doing so will hopefully keep it's contents dry.
Although this cache is on the fringe of the mountains please ensure you are properly prepared for mountain type conditions.
