O concelho de Carapito é mencionado nas Inquirições Gerais de D. Afonso III e na Carta de Foral de Aguiar da Beira, ambas de 1258, havendo, no entanto, referências possivelmente mais antigas, no primeiro foral português. A 10 de maio de 1514, D. Manuel I concedeu a Carapito o que terá sido o seu primeiro foral. É provável que o pelourinho tenha sido erigido nesse mesmo ano.
O pelourinho situa-se no Largo da Praça, onde é possível visitar ainda o Monumento aos 500 anos do Foral de Carapito e, a partir dele, a Igreja Paroquial, a antiga Capela de Santo António — situada na rua junto ao Pelourinho — e a Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, ao lado da sede da Junta de Freguesia.
O pelourinho assenta sobre uma base com quatro degraus de forma octogonal e é composto por uma coluna e um remate decorativo, incluindo base e capitel simples. A coluna é lisa, também octogonal, e assenta numa base quadrada com cantos chanfrados, passando gradualmente para a forma da coluna. No topo, termina num pequeno capitel circular decorado de forma simples.
Sobre o capitel ergue-se o elemento superior do pelourinho, em forma de gaiola de grandes dimensões, composta por duas estruturas piramidais truncadas, sendo a inferior invertida. A parte superior é sustentada por uma coluna central e por oito colunas laterais menores. Estas colunas assentam em suportes decorados e são rematadas por pequenos pináculos. Algumas colunas estão danificadas ou desapareceram, mas vários ferros de apoio garantem a estabilidade da estrutura.
O conjunto é finalizado por um pináculo com uma pequena esfera no topo, da qual se projeta uma bandeirola em ferro forjado. Na região existem outros pelourinhos semelhantes, destacando-se o de Aguiar da Beira, no mesmo concelho.
O pelourinho foi classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Público (IIP) em 11 de outubro de 1933.

The municipality of Carapito is mentioned in the General Inquiries of King Afonso III and in the Charter of Aguiar da Beira, both dating from 1258, although there may be earlier references in the first Portuguese charter. On 10 May 1514, King Manuel I granted Carapito what is believed to have been its first charter. It is likely that the pillory was erected in the same year.
The Pillory is located in Largo da Praça, where it is also possible to visit the Monument to the 500 Years of the Charter of Carapito and, from there, the Parish Church, the former Chapel of Saint Anthony — situated on the street next to the Pillory — and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, beside the Parish Council headquarters.
The pillory stands on a base with four octagonal steps and is composed of a column and a decorative top, including a simple base and capital. The column is smooth, also octagonal, and rests on a square base with chamfered corners, gradually transitioning to the shape of the column. At the top, it ends with a small circular capital decorated in a simple style.
Above the capital rises the upper part of the pillory, in the form of a large cage, composed of two truncated pyramidal structures, with the lower one inverted. The upper structure is supported by a central column and eight smaller lateral columns. These columns rest on decorated supports and are topped with small pinnacles. Some of the columns are damaged or missing, but several iron supports ensure the stability of the structure.
The monument is finished with a pinnacle topped by a small sphere, from which projects an iron flag/banner. In the region, there are other similar pillories, notably the one in Aguiar da Beira, in the same municipality.
The pillory was classified as a Property of Public Interest (IIP) on 11 October 1933.
