Geocache Description:

Union School was originally located in Hancock County, Illinois.

This One-Room School was built in 1887 and closed in 1956. Like most one-room schools there was 1 teacher for grades 1 through 8.

After it’s closing, Union School was relocated and used as a gift shop.

The Adams County Retired Teachers’ Association purchased the school, moved it to its present location and restored it.

Students in one-room schools learned with the help of their teacher and their classmates. Younger students listened to older students recite their lessons.

Students also had additional responsibilities like carrying water from the outside pump and collecting wood to heat the school.

This cache is dedicated with a great big THANK YOU to all retired teachers.
