A lovely and very old oak tree.
This tree is over 120 years old, so catch it while you can. It's the largest Bur Oak in the state and Clemson has done a great job of taking care of it. Also, I'm told that it's fragile and even walking around it can cause damage, so please view it from the surrounding hard surfaces (like the sidewalk you will no doubt be standing on).
The cache is quite close to the tree, so take in the view as you snatch this park n grab.
Bring your own pen.
Note: if you come during the work week, you'll need to park in the metered spaces, a short walk away from the cache. After hours, parking in the green (employee) spaces is OK.
Addendum: As someone has pointed out that the cache is not particularly close to the tree, I thought I should pass along the correspondence I had with the managing agent for this historic landmark as explanation--
"Thank you for your interest in our wonderful Bur Oak. Due to its age and location it is in a fragile state. Soil compaction is a serious condition for trees and in recent years alot of work has been done under the Bur Oak to help open up the soil for better air and water exchange. Increased foot traffic under and around the tree could contribute to soil compaction. We appreciate admirers of the tree and understand that everyone wants what is best for its health. Viewing the tree from the surrounding hard surface areas is in the tree's best interest."
