The Streetscape of Shiraichi
It is thinkable that the construction of Shiroyama castle in the age of civil wars formed Shiraichi.
During the Edo era, the biggest cattle market in the feudal clan was opened because it was an important traffic point, located almost in the middle of the southern part of Hiroshima clan.
It is said that at the height of prosperity, more than 500 head of cattle being gathered in a day, the market was crowded.
Some wealthy merchants run a sake brewing industry or a salt pan at the Inland Sea.
The street, including the former residence of Kihara family designated as the national important cultural asset, hands down the appearance making someone look back on the past.
A casting industry had actively been carried since about the end of the Tokugawa regime, producing numerously such as pots and pans, and Buddhist temple bells. Especially, a big bronze garden hanging lantern in front of the high stage, donated to Itsukushima Shrine, is its supreme masterpiece.
