Poco lontano dal mar Adriatico, poco lontano dal mar Jonio, sopra la punta del tacco d'Italia si trova un borgo incantevole, tra i più belli d'Italia!
Not far from the Adriatic Sea, not far from the Ionian Sea, on the tip of the heel of Italy there is a beautiful village, one of the most beautiful in Italy!
Il paese trae il proprio nome dal termine specchie, il quale stava ad indicare un accumulo di pietre piatte (anche di notevoli dimensioni) risalenti all’età del ferro, destinate alla difesa e a fungere da postazione di vedetta. La lontananza dal mare e l’essere posizionata su una collina in un territorio totalmente piatto, fecero di Specchia un luogo sicuro per gli uomini del primo Medioevo, tanto che la popolazione aumentò in breve tempo. La cittadina attuale ebbe tuttavia origine intorno all’anno Mille e fu sottoposta nei secoli alla dominazione di numerose famiglie: i Monteroni, gli Orsini, i del Balzo, i Guarini, gli Artus, i Protonobilissimo, i de Capua, i della Ratta, gli Astore, i Falcone, i Pignatelli, i Ripa e i Risolo, per non citare che i maggiori, sino alla soppressione della feudalità nel 1806. Di particolare rilievo artistico sono il palazzo dei conti Risolo, costruito nel Settecento sui resti di un precedente edificio cinquecentesco; il palazzo Scoto, dalla splendida facciata seicentesca; la Chiesa ipogea della Madonna del Passo; il convento dei Francescani Neri, con la chiesa munita di pregevoli rifinimenti gotici, la Cappella in onore di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, e la cripta recante affreschi in stile bizantino.
Meritano una visita i frantoi ipogei di Specchia (visit link) visitabili solo se accompagnati: è necessario rivolgersi alla Pro Loco (via Garibaldi, tel. 0833539157, orario 9/12 - 18/20). Buon divertimento!
The village takes its name from the "specchie", to indicate a build up of flat stones (also very big) present in Iron Age, for the defense and act as lookout. The distance from the sea and being positioned on a hill in an area totally flat, made of Specchia a safe place for men of the early Middle Ages, so that the population increased rapidly. The village, however, originated around the 1000 and subjected to domination over the centuries by many families: Monteroni, Orsini, the Dodge, the Guarini, the Artus, the Protonobilissimo, de Capua, of the rats, Goshawk, the Falcon, the Pignatelli, the Ripa and resolute, not to mention that the largest, until the abolition of feudalism in 1806. Of particular interest are the palace of art Risolo, built in the eighteenth century on the ruins of an earlier century building, the palace Scotus, the great seventeenth-century facade, the Church of Our Lady of the underground pass, and the convent of the Franciscan Blacks, with the church provided with refinements fine Gothic chapel in honor of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and the crypt containing frescoes in Byzantine style.
