Fjellsjøen ligger nordøst for Gjerdingen, langs bomveien som går inn fra Svartbekken.
Den store reguleringsplanen som gikk ut på å skaffe mer vann til brukene i Akerselven, og samtidig mer drikkevann til byens borgere, førte til at Gjerdingen og Grimsvann ble regulert. Fjellsjøen måtte deretter demmes opp for å få nok vann til fløting i den krevende Gjerdingselven. Utløpet og bekken ble utsprengt for å kunne tappe Fjellsjøen maksimalt.
Johannes Dahl, forfatter av "Nordmarka - eventyr og eldorado" hadde ved disse bredder sitt barndoms paradis. Som sønn av Hakadals Jernverks bestyrer kunne unge Dahl til fulle nyte privilegiet det var at familien hadde bruksrett til Fjellsjøhytten, bygget 1879, og det store tilhørende vann. Her sto han som en villmann på ski ned fra Karusputten på Fjellsjøhøgda til Gjerdingen, og rodde inn i den hemmelighetsfulle Ekkovika helt nord i sjøen. Hans lilleerindringsbok fra 1942 er en verdifull beretning om livet i Nordmarka slik det var før veienes og det organiserte friluftslivs tid.
Hytta som i dag står ved dammen ved Fjellsjøens sydspiss er
identisk med hytta familien Dahl tok i bruk i 1879. Den eies nå av Løvenskiold og er utleid til private.
Til Fjellsjøhytta går det en avstikker fra skogsveien Skillingen-Gjerdingen.

Fjellsjøen is located northeast of Gjerdingen along the toll road that runs from Svartbekken. The major development plan which was to provide more water for farms in the Aker river, and more water to city residents, led to Gjerdingen and Grimsvannet was regulated. Fjellsjøen had to be regulated to get enough water to do timber floating in the demanding Gjerding River. The outlet and the creek was blasted to drain Fjellsjøen maximally. Johannes Dahl, author of "Northern Forest - adventure and paradise" had his childhood paradise here. As the son of Hakadal ironworks manager, young Dahl could enjoy the full privilege it was that the family had the right to use Fjellsjøhytten, built 1879, and the large nearby lake. Here he stood like a maniac on skis down from Karusputten on Fjellsjøhøgda to Gjerdingen, and rowed into the mysterious Echo bay north of the lake. His small book from 1942 is a valuable account of life in the northern forest as it was before the road and the organized outdoor life came. The cottage which currently stands at the dam at Fjellsjøen's southern tip is identical to the cottage family Dahl started using in 1879. It is now owned by Løvenskiold and are leased to private. To Fjellsjøhytta there is a detour from the forest road Skillingen- Gjerdingen.
