This is near where the M6 finally cuts through the Lancaster canal.
End of the canal?,well not quite.
Lancaster canal was constructed between 1797 and 1826,the Chief Engineer,Architect and designer was John Rennie who overcame numerous obstacles along the route.
There is a big tunnel at Hincaster, and the amazing Lune Aqeduct, and a series of locks at Tewitfield, and a link to Glasson where the canal meets the sea.
First the railways became competitors, then the roads, and slowly the canal died.
The canal was constructed over many years, but never quite finished, and finally closed in 1955, by act of Parliament. This allowed the M6 construction,in 1968, to finally kill the route in several places.
The A6,the canal, the London Glasgow railway line all follow the level ground North of Carnforth, and the M6 pushed in to run alongside all 3. Where it first met the canal North of Tewitfield the solution was simple ,run the M6 straight through and culvert the canal. It is almost inconceivable this would happen today.
There are well funded plans to reopen this Northern section, but the obstacles and funds required are enormous, but if John Rennie could do it 200 years ago…….
The cache is located near the road bridge close to the point where the canal is breached, but the navigable section ends just a bit further South at Tewitfield.
There is easy parking near the roadbridge over the M6 very close to the cache.
The cache is a small screw top container with only room for a log and pencil
Please replace the cache carefully, and please no hints or spoilers in the logs.
