The remains of the Guibal Fanhouse at Warsett Hill provide a reminder of the ironstone mining that was once a major industry in the area. Today both the fanhouse and the surrounding area are cared for by the National Trust.
The National Trust is a charity that protects special places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for ever, for everyone
The fanhouse was part of the Huntcliff ironstone mine that operated between 1872 and 1906. A complex maze of horizontal tunnels (or bords) were mined out of the ironstone seam beneath the ground and the stone hauled up in tubs using a steam driven rope system. Eventually the pillars between the bords were removed too as the miners worked back through the mine.
The gas and dust that could build up in the mines made it dangerous and unpleasant work. The Guibal fanhouse improved conditions by drawing stale air out of the mine by the means of a huge rotating fan. Named after its Belgian inventor, these fanhouses sprung up all over the area. Today the remains at Warsett are the best preserved.
