Valley Park Woods are a series of separate woods, including Clothiers Copse, Knightwood, Small Profits and Titlark Copse. The woods are in an area which in the mid 1980s, changed from being predominantly rural to urban by the expansion of Chandlers Ford to the east. The rapid development of the surrounding previously agricultural land-use has left these woods surrounded with dense housing, an industrial estate and associated infrastructure. The woods are generally comprised of oak, ash and birch with some under storey of hazel, holly and other shrubs. In the late 1990s, prior to the development of the land just to the west of the woods, (on the other side of Knightwood Road), a desk study of past archaeological field surveys was carried out. It produced features and finds of various dates from the Prehistoric Period through to the Medieval Period. As well as possibly harbouring archaeological features, these woods are important in the local landscape and provide invaluable public access, predominantly for dog walkers. In addition, much of the woodland may be ancient in origin (i.e. pre 1600).
