Geocache Description:

This is just one of the caches placed by the National Trust along the part of the Durham Coast that we care for, so if you enjoy this one please check out the others.

The National Trust is a charity that protects special places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for ever, for everyone.

The Durham Coast has recovered from its industrial past to become one of the finest stretches of coastline in the country. The Magnesian Limestone that underlies the area gives rise to spectacular displays of rare wild-flowers in the summer while the steep sided denes that cut through the cliff are sheltered havens for all sorts of wildlife.

Towards the end of the 19th century there were a number of significant ship wrecks in the area as trade in coal and industrial goods between Newcastle and London increased. One of the measure introduced to prevent such disaster was the building of a coastguard station at Hawthorn Dene. This cache can be found close to the remains of the building.
