A nice little walk along one of Scioto Trails State forest Horse trails.
Scioto trails state forest has many hiking and horse trails all throught out the park. This one is located near the old airport landing strip that still has many uses besides landing airplanes. The most common use is as a horse camp. We have also seen it used recently as a staging area for the logging company as they were harvesting timber from the forest, and occasionally the military will use it to land their helicopters for training excercises.
You can travel one of the horse trails that is marked with white paint on the trees. The trail head starts about a third of the way along the field when you travel the access road around from parking.
The trail will take you to what is left of a small drainage pond nestled in the hills above the airport landing strip. The pond is home to quite a few frogs and toads. We don't know if there are any fish left in the water, we hope to bring a pole sometime and find out. :) The final few feet to the cache container may be a little steep from the trail, so please be cautious.
You may also elect not to travel along the trail, but instead take a more direct route through the woods to the cache. Just be warned that the first leg of that route is through a small swampy area and remains damp all year. :) This area is not only popular with horseback riders, but also with hunters in the fall because this is a public hunting area. I would suggest not looking for this cache during the Deer gun season in ohio.
This area is absolutely beautiful in the fall season with the wide varieties of trees in color along the hillsides. My son and I have seen deer, rabbits, squirrels,snakes and a flock of wild turkeys milling about the field on our trips here. We hope you will enjoy this 'out of the way' part of the park as much we do!
