Geocache Description:


This cache is hidden in the Jensen's Pines area of the Audubon Trails Ozarks Nature Reserve, a 60-acre nature reserve owned by the Ozark Rivers Chapter of the National Audubon Society. This area was once owned by Bill Jensen and his wife, Emma. Bill was a highly respected Physics Professor at the Missouri School of Mines (now MST). During the great Depression, their son, James, worked on farms and later joined the CCC. He came back from the CCC to attend college but soon left to fight WWII in Europe. Bill planted 300 short leaf pine saplings on the property in 1937. Today these trees tower over the forest.

THIS IS A KIDS CACHE! Kids are authorized to take an item without leaving anything in trade. Please mention in your log if the contents start running low - I'll come out and replenish it! The cache is a Rubbermaid container stocked with kid-friendly items. PLEASE take an extra moment to make sure the lid is snapped in place all the way around before you put the cache back in its place and replace the geo-flage! Thanks!

The Reserve is dedicated to education, with a commitment to habitat restoration and preservation. When completed, the Reserve will have over 4 miles of trails that will traverse 5 distinct ecosystems including a dolomite glade, tall-grass prairie, oak savannah, upland oak forest with 2 stands of shortleaf pine, and a spring-fed riparian zone. A trail map of the nature reserve is available at (visit link) We recommend following the trails rather than bushwacking; all of the caches on the area are fairly close to the trails. Much of the vegetation in the area is native with the exception of invasive species such as eastern red cedar, which have taken over since man introduced fire control to the Rolla area.

Permission to place this and other caches on the nature reserve has been granted by the Ozark Rivers Chapter of the National Audubon Society.
