ON TOP OF ONEIDA
COUNTY
At 1940+ feet above sea level, Tassel Hill is one of the two
highest points in Oneida county. The other high point with nearly
identical elevation is located roughly 0.7 miles south of Tassel
Hill. Visit cohp.org for more information. This two stage
Multi-Cache will take you to both county high points. Expect
a 1.5 mile round trip bushwhack.
Warnings!
• Wear ORANGE BLAZE
during any hunting season.
• There is a dirt road that can be followed all the way to
high point #1. The road is SEASONAL and in very poor
condition. It is very badly washed out with deep ruts and dangerous
ditches on both sides. Come prepared with an appropriate
vehicle. I was driving a 4WD truck when I placed the geocache
and made it as far as the closest suggested parking spot before
walking the rest of the way up the hill. See photos for a picture
of the road conditions.
• There is an old trail which can be followed most of the way
between the two high points. However, the trail is overgrown with
deep weeds, fallen trees and briar patches. Come prepared for a
long bushwhack. Long pants REQUIRED.
• "Tassel Hill" should be renamed "Deerfly Paradise." There
were about 50 of the nasty biting insects swarming and waiting to
attack outside my truck when I placed this geocache. You won't be
disappointed if you bring along your mosquito head net.
More Information:
Both stages are located within the Albert J Woodford Memorial
State Forest. This cache was set following the DEC guidlines
Part 190: Use Of
State Lands.
"1. a geocache that is labeled with the owner's name and address
and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural
conditions of the site or injure a tree;"
My purpose in placing this geocache was to highlight the two
highest points in Oneida county. The hides for both stages are not
meant to be tricky. I want you to find this geocache. Therefore, I
have provided explicit hints and spoiler photos if you want to
guarantee a find. Stage 1 is a clear, oversized micro container
containing coordinates for the next stage. Stage 2 is an ammo box,
containing a log book, a few trackables, trade items and a FTF $5
gift certificate for Holland Farms Bakery. Both stages are placed
off the ground and should be fairly easy to find in the winter.
There is a nice view to the North East from the first high
point. High point #2 is in the middle of dense forest undergrowth
with no view.
Good Luck and Have Fun!
