Plastic ammo box hidden in the area of the Three Mile Swamp Dam. Vehicle parking is in the gravel pull-over area along Route 10 within sight of the dam. Should be a fairly-easy park and grab.
The Three Mile Swamp Dam is part of a wide, flat floodplain and wetland complex owned by the City of Keene. This area attracts wildlife and birds. The Three Mile Swamp Dam was constructed as a part of the Beaver Brook Local Protection Project, and it is located on Beaver Brook, which is a tributary of the Ashuelot River. This dam reduces flood damages to the property located downstream along a 3.5 mile reach of the Beaver Brook. Beaver Book flows right through the heart of Keene's oldest and more densely populated neighborhoods and the business district. Flooding along the one-mile of stream that passes through Keene's business district has been a recurring problem. This dam was built between May-November 1986 at a cost of $2.7 million. Work on the project included replacing an existing 190-foot long stone dam with a 250-foot long concrete dam and spillway. When filled to capacity, floodwaters would cover 106 acres behind the dam. The dam does not eliminate flooding on Beaver Brook; instead, it temporarily stores floodwaters in the natural flood storage retention area of Three Mile Swamp and the adjacent lowlands, preventing these floodwaters from racing downstream into Keene.
