DopaMulti 2 - Space Invaders Multi-Cache

DopamineNL: Although I personally feel this is my best cache (most original and interesting for others, which I feel are the most important aspects), sadly it's not coming back online...

After it came online no less than three (!) of the remaining invaders disappeared. After 12 years of hanging on in the Amsterdam streets they finally perished in their battle against the relentless and absolute culture-barren local city cleaners (the same ones who also destroyed my cache-invader, as is the inevitable faith of all street art..). RIP.

And with only a few invaders left there isn't much of a multi left to do. Feel free to find them on your own, I don't even mind if you log the archived cache when you do. Invader hunting is always fun!!

Geocache Description:
EN Space Invader is a French urban street artist (1969) known for placing small tile-mosaics of aliens based on the classic 1978-game Space Invaders. He is currently still active and has invaded over 31 cities in France, and 22 others worldwide. Paris tops the list, with now over 1000(!!) invaders.
Space Invader was one of the featured artists in the 2010 Banksy film ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ and his work has been shown in various galleries (eg. in the NLs in the MAMA gallery in Rotterdam, 2002). But unlike Banksy, Space Invader has given interviews on occasion (masked, of course). Other activities include placing Space Invaders in actual space and underwater, and his own new type of art: Rubikcubism. Art made with Rubik’s Cubes.

In 1999 Space Invader invaded Amsterdam and Rotterdam. During this invasion he placed 26 invaders in Amsterdam. This drew quite some attention as some were very prominently located (like at the Vondelpark entrance). Sadly, the city wasn’t amused, considered them graffiti and tried to remove them all (AT5 video). In 2013 about 11 original invaders still remain.

But walking through Amsterdam the change of spotting an invader is actually quite high. This is due to a ‘copycat’ called AmsterInvader, who originally continued Space Invaders work in Amsterdam, but quickly developed his own style and designs. Between 2005 and 2009 AmsterInvader placed 149 invaders in Amsterdam (and more in cities like Rotterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen and Groningen), so most invaders you see are actually his.
And finally, another pixel artist visited Amsterdam in 2007. German based Pixel Monster placed a modest 11 small mosaics throughout town. No idea which or where.
NL Space Invader is een Franse maker van straatkunst (1969) die bekend staat om het overal opplakken van tegelmozaïekjes van kleine ruimtemonstertjes (‘invaders’) gebaseerd op het klassieke 1978 computer spel Space Invaders. Hij is momenteel nog steeds actief en heeft ondertussen al zo’n 31 Franse steden ‘invaded’, en daarbuiten nog 22 andere steden over de hele wereld. Parijs is met voorsprong de meest beplakte stad met meer dan 1000(!!) invaders.
Space Invader was een van de kunstenaars die te zien is in de Banksy film uit 2010 ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’. Zijn werk was bovendien al te zien in diverse galerieën waaronder het Nederlandse MAMA in Rotterdam in 2002. Deze trokken gelijk veel belangstelling omdat sommige op wel erg prominente plaatsen verschenen (bv het beeld bij de ingang van het Vondelpark). Helaas was dit voor de gemeente reden om ze te beschouwen als graffiti en derhalve te proberen ze allemaal weer te verwijderen (AT5 filmpje). Nu, in 2013, zijn er nog ongeveer 11 authentieke invaders in Amsterdam te vinden.

Maar als je door Amsterdam loopt is de kans dat je een invader ziet hangen toch nog best groot. Dit komt vooral door het werk van een imitator/volger/bewonderaar genaamd AmsterInvader, die oorspronkelijk het werk van Space Invader voortzette/kopieerde, maar gaandeweg zijn eigen stijl en ontwerpen begon te ontwikkelen. Tussen 2005 en 2009 plaatste deze AmsterInvader 149 invaders in Amsterdam (en nog een paar meer in oa. Rotterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen en Groningen). De meeste invaders die je nu op straat ziet zijn dus feitelijk het werk van AmsterInvader.
Tenslotte is er nog een derde pixel kunstenaar die in 2007 in Amsterdam is geweest, de uit Duitsland afkomstige Pixel Monster. Hij/zij plaatste een bescheiden 11 tegelmozaïekjes door de stad. Geen idee waar en welke.


 
EN During this cache you will experience what it is like to be hunting for classic street art. Armed with nothing more than an old (and indeed not very clear) map Space Invader once posted on his website, and a list of all the original invader-designs he used throughout Amsterdam. To help I already crossed off all locations and designs that have been completely deleted (current status for May, 2013).

It's your task to match the location (letters) with the right invader (numbers). Use the list and map given here on the right (click=large version).

Start wherever you like, follow any route you see fit (A to O is about 6km). Most locations have an additional hint (see below), and the following remarks are important to note:
  • Sadly the Invader Mothership (nr.14) has departed the planet. There used to be a note there, but now nothing is left...
  • Two Invaders on the list only have glue-remains visible. One was on a store (who deleted it in 2012), the other is still recognisable, but only through shape (nr.5)
  • One Invader is badly damaged, but still recognisable by one or two uniquely located tiles
  • One Invader has been replaced by other street art (nr.15)
  • Invader nr.9 is actually surrounded by blue tiles
  • Invader nr.8 was DELETED in June 2013 (2 weeks after this cache was published!). It was at location L.
NL Tijdens deze cache zul je ervaren hoe het is om naar classsic street art op zoek te zijn. Terwijl je niet veel meer hebt dan een rommelig kaartje (dat door Space Invader zelf ooit op zijn website gezet is) en een lijstje met de invader-vormen die ooit in Amsterdam hebben gehangen. Om een beetje te helpen heb ik alvast alle totaal gedelete locaties en vormen weggestreept (actueel t/m Mei, 2013). Dat scheelt weer zoeken..!

Het is de bedoeling om alle locaties (letters op het kaartje) te koppelen aan de juiste invader (nummer in de lijst). Lijst en kaart vind je rechts van deze tekst (klik=grote versie).

Start waar je wilt. Volg de route die je zelf kiest (van A naar O is ongeveer 6km). De meeste locaties hebben nog een extra hint (zie “additional hints”), en hieronder staan nog een paar extra opmerkingen die zeker zullen helpen:
  • Helaas heeft het Invader moederschip (nr.14) de planeet verlaten. Deze had nog wel een boodschap achtergelaten, maar die is recent ook verdwenen...
  • Bij twee van de Invaders op de lijst zijn alleen nog lijmresten zichtbaar. Eentje zat op een winkel (die hem in 2012 verwijderde), en de ander is alleen nog herkenbaar aan de vorm (nr.5)
  • Een Invader van de lijst is zo ernstig beschadigd dat deze alleen nog herkenbaar is aan een of twee ‘unieke’ tegeltjes in het ontwerp
  • Een Invader van de lijst is vervangen door andere street art (nr.15)
  • Invader nr.9 heeft in het echt allemaal blauwe tegeltjes om zich heen (dat is op het lijstje niet zichtbaar)
  • Invader nr.8 is DELETED/verwijderd in Juni 2013 (2 weken nadat deze cache online kwam!). Hij zat op locatie L.
