G'day Geocachers
Met Weather Magic 2 is one of over 30 caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world. It replaces a previous cache located nearby that was muggled several times.
This cache is located near the Giles Weather Station, one of the most remote of 37 field stations around Australia operated by the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology. Information gathered is critical to national and global climate measurement and forecasting. The station is named in honour of the famous outback explorer, Earnest Giles, who visited the area in the 1870s.
Four permanent staff now use the most modern satellite, radio and telephone communication techniques, but once relied on HF radio.
This site is located on the margin between two large Australian bio-regions - the Gibson Desert to the west and Central Ranges to the east. Note the visible difference in landscape character.
Activity: Hydrogen filled weather balloons are released and tracked by radar twice daily. Visitors are welcome to observe and visit the weather station. Arrange your visit to coincide with release times! Don't miss it.
