Geocache Description:

This cache is located on top of the mountain, at a historic Civil War encampment. It is near the WV and VA state line.

You can reach this cache by traveling on US Route 250 between Bartow, WV and Monterey, VA. There is a dirt road that turns southwest off of 250 just yards inside of WV. There are signs noting Camp Allegheny. It is 2 miles from the highway. Later there is a sign that says 1/2 mile, but it should read 1 1/2. After fighting with Union troops at the Battle of Greenbrier River, Confederate soldiers moved their camp to this site on top of Buffalo Mountain. This camp was set up in July 1861. They stayed here for the rest of the year and were attacked by Union troops on December 13. The Union troops were repulsed and moved their forces back to Cheat Summit Fort. The Confederates, while having chosen a strategically placed mountain of 4400 feet, would find that winter at this location would be extremely harsh. Also, it was difficult to transport supplies to this camp. Many of the troops would succumb to disease. Finally, with all the difficulties encountered here, the Confederates abandoned Camp Allegheny in April 1862. When you get to the site of the former Confederate encampment, you can read the sign and learn all about the history of this location. Then when you are finished, head into the woods to locate the cache. It isn't more than 150 yds from the parking area. There are many fallen trees. There are many fallen trees.
