The Col de Sommeiller Est is a small summit right above the actual col overlooking the Sommeiller glacier and Sommeiller lake. Its height above sea level is 3018m and it is located in France since the border between Italia and France is right on the col. From the Punta C.d.S est you have a splendid view to the Vallon valley. The col is named after the engineer Germain Sommeiller (* March 15, 1815, † July 11, 1871) who was responsible for the construction of the 12km long Fréjus Tunnel near Bardonecchia.
You can get to C.d.S. via 4x4, Enduro, VTT/MTB or simply hiking up there. The rest you have to hike through alpine terrain with large snow fields and cliffs posing addtional dangers. It is not advisible to walk too close to the lake to get to the cache location!
For more information on C.d.S. you can also visit the listing of my nearby Virtual Geocache "Top of the Alps".
Pls. be advised that this is high alpine terrain and all alpine dangers apply. Make sure to have the proper equipment and experience. Especially the weather must be taken into account! Méteo France is a good place to look for a weather forecast.
A note on cache maintenance: Myself as well as members of Team GeoJeeper visit C.d.S. at least once a year in the small time frame to get there in the summer months. You can go there in the winter but you wouldn´t find the cache.
Logs which are not written in the local languages (italian, french) or english are highly ignorant and not welcome in this listing. Pls. use translate.google.com if necessary.
Pictures of you at the cache location are very much appreciated.
This poor little container has a tough life. Please help it by hiding it properly and not crushing it with stones.
