Another Cake Crumb Trail for all those dessert lovers
Broughton Astley is a combination of two Saxon settlements of Broctone and Sutone dating from 550 AD and the Danish settlement of Thorp established around 875 AD. In 1086 Broughton , Sutton and Primethorpe boasted 28 families as residents. During the late 19th Century industries flourished, including the Turner Jarvis Factory, the Railway and a Brickyard. The Eastly family of whom the present Community College have as a namesake were Lords of the Manor from 1220 to 1402. Later through marriage the estate passed to the Greys of Groby, who assembled the Leicestershire Militia in June 1642 prior to the Civil War. For years agriculture was the ‘mainstay’ for the area, even during the enclosures in 1637, when present farming systems and hedgerows were established, old field names gave way to todays road names. Industry came to the village in 1750 with the first stocking frame, by 1845 there were 1,100 frames, making Broughton Astley the third largest knitwear centre in the country. With a total population of only 746, additional operators commuted from surrounding villages - hence 13 miles of footpaths!
We would like you to enjoy these well trodden ridgeways.
