Built on the western edge of New Bern, NC, after its occupation by Union forces in March 1862, Fort Totten played an active role in the Civil War. The Union army mounted a campaign to gain control of New Bern because it would help them gain control of North Carolina's sounds, coast and the Neuse River. Their success in occupying the city gave the Union a strong base to launch further attacks into the state. The fort is named after Union General Joseph Gilbert Totten, who was born in New Haven CT, in 1788. Today Fort Totten is a pretty family park on a five and one-half acre site. It includes a nice variety of recreational facilities, picnic shelters and restrooms. **** FTF to BriarRose13 ! ****
