In 1910, when the Bumping Lake dam was compeleted, Jack and Kitty Nelson took residence as the first gatetenders for Bumping. He and his wife spent the next 37 years living year round at the lake. In applying for this job, one of the requirements was this individual had to be married; Jack was not. "Give me a week" said Jack, and he met and married Kitty in a weeks time.
During the summer monhs Jack's job was to operate and maintain the reservoir gates and keep the outlets free of drift wood. In addition to this, year round, he spent his time tending to 23 miles of telephone line. This line stretched between Bumping Lake and Naches. This, in the winter, reuired Jack to travel these distances on skis and by walking. Jack often said, "This is no place for a sissy".
This cache has been placed in honor of the devotion and commitment given by Jack and Kitty for the 37 years of service tending Bumping Lake. The location of the cache is in the area which they called home. Once you find the cache, take a minute to soak in the beauty of what Bumping Lake has to offer. As you look out past the overflow across the lake, the ridge to the left is called Nelson's ridge. Thanks Jack.
