Donbert: I want to keep peace in Geocaching, I am disappointed to see a long standing geocache, that has been Welcomed, Embraced, and Loved by most all who have found it, all of a sudden be rejected. The point being made by the last comment (tiredoftrespass), I am disabling this geocache, hoping that some resolution can be obtained. If there is a possibility of relocation to a less controversial place, I will work with the reviewers on that. Thank All of You who have supported this geocache since the original owner placed it in 2011, over 15 years ago. I had the pleasure of adopting it last year, and always got a big smile from the genuine, and positive comments. Donbert

Geocache Description:


Nelly Custis Lewis was the bride of Major Lawrence Lewis, George Washington's nephew. General Washington was rather found of Custis, so he gave the newly married couple a part of his estate, Woodlawn Plantation. Woodlawn is the historical site where this cache is located (permission granted by the property manager -- read further for hours of operation and parking directions). The plantation has changed hands several times since Custis and Lawrence's days. One thing, however, has been common throughout Woodlawn's history: Agriculture. Today, the property hosts an educational, sustainable farm managed by the non-profit Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture http://arcadiafood.org/ . We encourage you to explore our farm and the Woodlawn estate during your visit. The Pope-Leighey House, a Frank L. Wright creation, is also on the property, if you care to take a tour (there is a fee to tour the Pope-Leighey House; there is no fee, however, to visit Arcadia Farm, where the cache is located). The property is open to the public Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesdays), 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Enter Woodlawn through its entrance on Woodlawn Road, accessible from Route 1 (Richmond Highway) at a stoplight between County Road 235 (Mount Vernon Memorial Highway) and the Pence Gate/Belvoir Road entrance to Ft. Belvoir. Once you enter through the main gate, follow the signs to the visitors' parking lot. The cache is located outside the perimeter of the farm. Arcadia staff may be present during your visit -- if so, have no fear! You're safe from prying Muggle eyes. And finally, two harmless hints (or rather, two hints to avoid any harm): 1.) there are beehives on the property (use caution when walking directly in front of the opening of the hives, this is a "pathway" for bees and you do not want to be in their way), and the cache is not hidden near there, and 2.) if no staff are present, the electric deer fence will likely be activated, so please keep a safe distance.
