Geocache Description:

Jay and Hempstead St, New London, CT. This is a 2 part series with 5 caches in each part and was developed as an Eagle Scout Project, to bring attention to the wonderful historic sites in the towns of Groton and New London and centers around the events of Sept 6, 1781. The cache is a medicine container containing only the logbook. Please see the first two caches in the series to get the complete historical story.

Cache #3:- The vast majority of homes in New London burned. A few remained and still do, to this day. Here at this intersection are the two Hempstead homes. The original home was built circa 1678. (The homes are open for tours, info is available on the plaque). These two homes, along with another a few blocks away on Coit St survived the burnings because they were on the outskirts of the town, as it was situated in those days. The court house, a few blocks north east, was also burned and rebuilt in 1784 on the outskirts of New London.
