Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache hidden in the fascinating Llanymynech Rocks Nature Reserve. It is part of a short series of caches along Offa's Dyke Path celebrating the landscape and stories of the Shropshire Border.

Llanymynech Rocks straddle the Shropshire/Powys border. Heading west from the cache takes you into Wales and onto Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail. This is one of the locations where the Trail follows the earthwork built by King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century. Offa himself recognised the value of this hill’s mineral wealth, throwing his earth wall around a lead mining site that had existed from before the Roman invasion.

The industrial revolution brought limestone quarrying on a huge scale and it is the limestone cliffs and spoil that makes this such a special place for wildlife. The nature reserve is managed jointly by Shropshire and Montgomery Wildlife Trusts who have given permission for the placement of the cache.

The cache is a large clip-sided A5 sized plastic box containing a small information panel. It includes some interesting trinkets for FTFers.

Park at the SWT car park off the A483 in Pant SJ271219 or Llanymynech Heritage Site car park of the A483 in Llanymynech SJ266210. The walk up through the Heritage Site past the unique Hoffman Kiln and up the 'English' incline plane is steep but very rewarding.
