Geocache Description:

Nice easy little nano cache in beautiful Bridgnorth. This cache is located on the Bridgnorth quayside and was chosen for it’s amazing views across the river and bridge. There are no access issues and the ground is level but this area can flood if the waters are very high. Please obey the warning signs.

Bridgnorth’s quayside had three dockyards as well as numerous warehouses, stables, and other commercial buildings. Many of the bargemen drank and lived in the houses along Cartway and Underhill Street.

Safe passage between Bristol and Montgomeryshire (155 miles) depended on the water level. Upstream came spices, groceries, wine, and rum. Downstream went coal, dairy produce, pottery, wood, leather, and iron goods. The trade peaked in the mid 18th century; when there were 376 vessels operating between Welshpool and Gloucester, including 75 from Bridgnorth. River trade declined with the opening of the original Severn Valley Railway in 1862.

There was a bridge here as early as the 10th century. The later stone bridge once had several houses on it including a church, and a gatehouse that had a portcullis and also served as a gaol. Shortly before Thomas Telford widened the bridge in 1822-23 these buildings were removed.

Congratulations to Elephantsrus for a very fast FTF only 12 mins after publication!!
