"Sand"wich @ Martin's Beach EarthCache
"Sand"wich @ Martin's Beach
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Martin's Head, located along the Fundy Coast, touching the Bay of
Fundy and part of the Fundy Foot Path is a geological wonder, with
many phenomena located with a reasonably small area. This
earthcache compliments several other in the area and brings
attention to another aspect of Martin's Head.
Please consult tide times before attempting this earthcache. At
high tide (especially extreme high), this cache may be very
difficult.
Sandstone and it's geology are discussed in several of the close
earthcaches, particularly with the formation of sea caves, such as
the ones seen further down this beach. The coordinates here take
you to a place where you witness how the activity of the earth
affects the formation of sandstone over thousands of years and
actually give you an idea of how the activity has varied over that
period.
At ground zero, you should be able to be compaction bands of
varying size and density. Of particular note, you will notice that
one type of band, is "sandwiched" by two other bands. Although all
three bands are sanstone, the two types are distinct in appearance
and texture.
In order to log this earthcache, you must perform the following two
tasks and email me your answers. 1) Estimate the width of the
middle band of this sandstone sandwich. 2)Suggest a theory as to
how this sandwich would have been created, geologically
speaking.
Although not required, please feel free to take and share pictures
of this area, but do not post spoiler pictures! You can also see
great examples of formation striations in this sandstone, as well
as many beautiful examples of the wave erosion and shaping of the
stone in this area. Enjoy your visit!
