Geocache Description:

As with many churches it is believed an earlier church stood on this site before this impressive 13th century church was constructed, the oldest parts dating from that time are the tower, Nave and Chancel, the South and North Aisles were either constructed of enlarged in the 14th or 15th centuries and the North Porch from the 15th century. On entering the North Porch there is a doorway to the right which leads to a stair turret giving access to the Priests room above. This room was used by Priests passing through the village on Pilgrimages, it was also used to hide the church's valuables. Opposite this door is a stoup, where parishioners dipped their fingers in consecrated water and crossed themselves on entering the church. The North Chapel is believed to have been built by the Clerke family, near the North Chapel is a doorway a few feet higher and smaller than normal, this gives access to the rood stairs that lead to the rood loft starting in the North Chapel, this and the rood screen no longer remain however an arch on the opposite wall is still in use giving access to the pulpit. The Nave is separated from the North and South Aisles by early English arcading, the pulpit was constructed during the restoration of 1848. To the south of the Nave is a 12th century addition standing on a Victorian tiled platform. At the eastern end of the South Aisle is a beautiful organ installed in 1886 in the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, beside this are two tombs hidden behind this huge structure, the tombs are of Sir Edward Waterhouse, who died in 1581, and the reconstruction of the tomb of Thomas Harlakenden. The South Aisle has a second chapel which is dedicated to St Nicholas, this holds an early piscina. The Chancel is an impressive area with choir stalls and two Clergy Stalls, the most interesting features here are the double piscina and ascending three-seated sedilia. Behind a curtain on the east wall is a double aumbry and on the north wall a larger recess which was used for the Easter Sepulchre, now restored and in use as a credence table. The cache is a magnetic nano with a log book only. Please return to original location, make sure it is attached and secure when replacing. Be particularly wary of muggles.........they seem to appear out of nowhere, so STEALTH is a must * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If anybody would like to expand to this series please, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
