This is the grave marker of 1st. lieut. Joseph Monroe Wood. Located in Sandstone Cemetery east of Milo Mo.
The cache is an ammo box nearby with swag and a copy of the book "Bushwhackers of the Border" by Patrick Brophy for FTF
Lieut. Wood served an interesting career in the Civil War.
--He served in William Henry Taylors Co. #1 6th cav 8th Div of the Missouri State Guard
--Participated in a raid on federal troops in April 1862 in Montevallo Mo. This didn't turn out too well because the feds came back the next day and burned the town down.
--Got captured and sent to POW camp in Springfield, Mo. While there, he came to the rescue of 2 lady bushwhackers by paying their hotel bill. They were there to plea (successfully) for the freedom of other bushwhackers.
--Served as personal guide to Sterling Price on his retreat from the battle of Mine Creek in 1864. This didn't work out too well either because Wood couldn't find the ford to cross big drywood creek.
You can read other facts about Wood and other notable bushwhackers in the book "Fire & Sword" by Patrick Brophy. Available in the Bushwhacker Museum in Nevada Mo.
